THE STORY
Beric Dondarrion was born in Blackhaven and served as a member of House Dondarrion. He eventually grew up to become the Lord of Blackhaven and a Knight in service to House Baratheon of Storm's End. Whilst paying particular care and attention to his duties as a vassal House, Lord Dondarrion enjoyed the spoils of a Knightly life in his youth; partaking in tourneys and often visiting King's Landing to enjoy the spoils of his King's victory.
Early during the War of the Five Kings, Eddard Stark, during his time as Hand of the King requested that Lord Beric muster a force of one hundred men and take them to to Ser Gregor Clegane's keep where he should be executed and held accountable for atrocities he committed; including murder and treason. Willingly, Beric agreed to the task, riding out with a fine group of men whom he distilled a great deal of his faith within. During the battle, Lord Beric is killed when Gregor Clegane drives a lance through his chest -- tossing him to the ground. However, unwittingly, Thoros of Myr resurrected him with his powers blessed upon him by the Lord of Light.
As a result of this extraordinary feat, the survivors of the battle came together to form the Brotherhood Without Banners. The group stand to uphold justice and what is right - no matter whom an individual is pledged to in the War of the Five Kings. When stumbling upon Arya Stark and Sandor Clegane, Beric challenged the Hound to a trial by combat to determine his innocence or guilt upon hearing accusations of his murderous crimes by Arya Stark. Championing Arya himself, Beric was once more killed by Sandor; proving his innocence in the eyes of the Lord of the Light. Despite his death, with the aid of Thoros of Myr, Dondarrion was once more brought back from beyond the grave.
Despite their just mission, the Brotherhood Without Banners were not absent of their questionable undertakings; utilising ransoming and selling of folk to Houses who wished for their kin back for gold. Whilst this was their main means of making an income and ensuring that the Brotherhood could remain a strong and determined force -- operating outside the parameters of bound loyalty -- from an outside perspective, they appeared sinister in their intent. This came to be when Beric and the Brotherhood sold Gendry to the Red Woman and had proposed that they would sell Arya back to her mother and brother in Riverrun.
When Arya flees her captivity with the Brotherhood, the group and Beric continued to operate at their fullest. With members of their own group stepping out of line and murdering a community who were building a sept, Beric and the others condemned the men to death; declaring that they would hang for their crimes. It is at this time that the Hound returned to them, demanding that he be allowed to hang the men as he had befriended many of the folk whom had been murdered by them. Beric agrees, however, ensures that Sandor not kill them in a barbaric manner.
It was at this time that Beric offered Sandor a place in the Brotherhood Without Banners, informing him that his attention had been moved from the War of the Five Kings and that he would be heading North to stop cold winds rising in the North, and that he would need many a more good men to ensure him victorious.
Thereafter, the group travel North. They come into contact with a group of Wildling's manning the East Watch whom they arrest and hold prisoner until Jon Snow arrives and grants their release. It is with this meeting that the group strike up an alliance and Beric and his company join Snow in his quest to capture wights and take them back to King's Landing to seize the aid of the rest of the Houses in the War Against the Dead.
Beric, Tormund and some of the others remain at East Watch to hold the Wall whilst Jon and the others venture back to King's Landing to reveal the White Walker's existence to Cersei. However, when the Night King arrives far sooner than believed, the group narrowly escape the Wall alive after a fierce attack from the Wight Dragon. Hastily, Beric, Tormund & some of the Night's Watch that they run into along the way arrive at Winterfell informing Jon and the others that the Night King shall be upon them within days and that the Wall has fallen.
