THE STORY
”I’m a slow learner, it’s true but I learn.”
From a young age, Sansa thought like most noble high-born girls did. She wanted to become queen by marrying the prince and having babies. Of course, Sansa jumped at the chance to fulfill this desire when her father and King Robert made the agreement of marrying Prince Joffrey to Sansa Stark. Even before the royal family leaves Winterfell however, Sansa learns her first lesson in how to play the game of surviving at court when she realizes she needs to lie against her sister in order to protect her family. She also learns how cruel they are when they order the execution of her direwolf, Lady, in place of Arya’s direwolf, Nymeria, after Nymeria bit Joffrey’s hand. Their father then takes the two sisters to King’s Landing where Ned Stark finds out that the royal Baratheon heir is a bastard and therefore is not the rightful heir to the throne. Soon after, King Robert dies and Ned Stark is imprisoned. Cersei forces Sansa to write a letter to her older brother, Robb stating that their father is a traitor and asked for Robb to bend the knee. Sansa begs for her father’s life to be spared but Joffrey has her father beheaded anyway. A few days later, Jeoffrey forces Sansa to gaze upon her father’s head on a spike and physically strikes her.
Sansa continues to learn the game of manipulation and uses her newfound skills to survive at King’s Landing to the best of her abilities. But with every successful move that Robb makes against the Lannisters, she gets worse treatment. Sansa turns down Tyrion’s offer to help her leave. She also ends up being almost raped by getting separated from the royal family in the streets outside of the Red Keep and is saved by the Hound. During the Battle of the Blackwater, Sansa learns more lessons from Cersei and also turns down another offer to leave made by the Hound. After the Battle of the Blackwater is won by the Lannisters, Joffrey denounces his engagement with Sansa Stark to announce his new engagement to Margaery Tyrell. But Petyr Baelish warns her that now she is no longer safe in King’s Landing.
Baelish then offers Sansa a third opportunity to flee and Sansa refuses, not trusting Baelish. Sansa is then summoned by the Tyrells and finally drops the act enough to tell the truth about how cruel Joffrey is. Margaery gives her hope of a brighter future which is then taken away once she learns of her new engagement to Tyrion Lannister which is forced upon by Tywin Lannister. The wedding takes place soon after and both Sansa and Tyrion are made to look like laughing stocks during the ceremony and the reception. Tyrion is kind to Sansa and refuses to consummate the marriage until Sansa is ready, even if that means she never is. Just when Sansa starts to slowly accept Tyrion’s kindness, news reaches her about the Red Wedding and how Robb and her mother were murdered by House Frey.
